Travis Culley – Editor / Director

Today’s guest it Travis Culley

Travis is Pittsburgh Pennsylvania based professional Editor and Videographer.
He has worked on 3 features,  twenty short films, one mini documentary, and has won a few Telly Awards to boot.

Some of the things we talked about include:

  • How editing can make you a better filmmaker
  •  Negative fill and lighting in general
  •  My theory of the ladder of understanding

How long have you lived in Pittsburgh?  I am a Pittsburgh lifer.  I went out to LA after college and stayed with some relatives, visited some studios, checked things out but really had no relevant experience other than college so getting a job out there wasn’t really practical.

What role(s) do you fill when making films? I am definitely not an actor.  I have done everything on set from: Audio, Grip, AD, AC, Producer, DP and Director.

About how many movies have you worked on? I have worked on 3 feature films and about 20 short films and one mini documentary.

What are some awards you’ve won or festivals you been in? (if any) I have won a few Telly Awards for commercials I’ve shot, edited and helped write.
One 48 hour best of for best use of Prop and have had a handful of short films accepted into various film festivals in and around western Pennsylvania over the past 10 years.

How long have you been making films?I started in High School making short films for school projects but my first official film festival selection was in 2010.

What are some of your “more visible” films?  Josie was a film I am proud to have directed, and edited.  It screened last year at the indie oaks festival and the year before in the Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival.

What’s the best way for people to reach out to you? I can be found on MySpace.  JK but I was a Facebook holdout for the first 10 years but about 5-6 years ago I worked at a production company that wanted me to manage a few social media accounts and I broke down and created a Facebook account.  That is probably the easiest way to find me.
